Where in the library are copies of the Library of Congress Classification Outline?

  • Paper copies are available at Reference Assistance on the 1st floor.
  • An online copy of the LC Classification Outline is also available.

What is it?

It is an outline of a classification scheme, devised over 100 years ago for the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., that organizes knowledge using 21 divisions represented by letters of the alphabet. Subclassifications are formed by the addition of letters, numbers, and decimals.  Most university and larger public libraries use LC Classification rather than the Dewey Decimal Classification which fits knowledge into 10 divisions.
